65 redundant at insolvent garage operator 7 July 2014

A Yorkshire-based garage and car dealership operator has entered administration, resulting in 65 redundancies.

Brian Leighton (Garages) Limited operates a Nissan, SsangYong and Isuzu dealership, as well as a Land Rover servicing centre in Howden, East Yorkshire.

The company also operated a used car dealership, a BP petrol forecourt and a 24-hour Spar shop.

Howard Smith and Jonny Marston of KPMG were appointed as joint administrators to the company on 25 June.

Administrators continue to the trade the Spar shop, however the rest of the business was closed pre-appointment. 65 of the company’s 81 staff have since been made redundant.

Smith, associate restructuring partner at KPMG, said: “The Brian Leighton business experienced severe cashflow difficulties in recent months, which hindered its ability to meet its financial obligations and fund new vehicles.

“We are currently reviewing options to find buyers for the premises and assets, as well as the petrol forecourt business and Spar shop. Interested parties are encouraged to get in touch.

“We have staff on site to assist employees with any queries and claims to the Redundancy Payments Office.”
