Sports Direct has acquired a specialised camping and outdoor equipment retailer from receivership.
Widnes-based Gelert Ltd has sold the majority of its business and assets to newly formed members of the Sports Direct International group.
Accountancy firm Grant Thornton advised on the sale. David Riley and Les Ross were appointed as administrative receivers on 21 June 2013 to complete the sale.
Riley said: “Gelert is a well-established brand. We have been able to secure a sale to set it on a new course for the future under new ownership.”
The consideration was not disclosed but the deal for the UK wholesale and retail parts of Gelert’s business secured around 100 jobs in Wales and the North West of England.
Grant Thornton is currently reviewing options for the Dublin retail operation, which was not included in the sale.
Grant Thornton’s Manchester-based cross advisory team, led by partners Ali Sharifi and David Riley, undertook a period of marketing of the business before securing the sale of the business to Sports Direct International.
Gelert was established in 1975 and operates as an importer, wholesaler and retailer of outdoor and camping equipment.
It has retail outlets in Porthmadog, Bedgellert, Caernarfon, Betws-y-coed and Dublin, plus a showroom in Haydock and wholesale activities operating from its headquarters.
