Corporate: White knight emerges for struggling Darlington FC 26 January 2012

Embattled Darlington FC’s future could be secured by the weekend after a potential white knight laid out his plans to rescue the club.

The Conference club – which was granted a “13th-hour” stay of execution last week – has only one game left before it could potentially be dissolved.

But venture capitalist Paul Wildes, 35, from Sheffield, has reportedly announced he intends to invest £300,000 in the club with fans donating a further £200,000 in return for a 40% share.

Wildes told the Northern Echo he is “confident” the club can come out of administration before the weekend once he has “ironed out a couple of legal issues”.

Speaking to Insolvency News Shaun Campbell of the Darlington FC Rescue Group said: “That’s all we know – things are happening all the time. We have other meetings to go to today.

“Time is not on our side but anything is possible.”

And a club spokesman added: “We know Paul is involved in some way but beyond that we don’t know.

“At this moment in time we have not had any confirmation.”

The plight of Darlington – nicknamed the Quakers – made headlines last week after their future was secured for a further three matches on the same day administrator Harvey Madden was expected to announce the club’s liquidation.

Madden, of Taylor Rowlands, told Insolvency News there are several interested bidders for the club.
